Eminent businessmen and members of the Multan Chamber of Commerce and Industry attended 4th Symposium on Social Standards

The Round Table group in association with Responsible Business Initiative organized the 4th GTZ AVE Awareness Symposium on Minimum Social Standards at Multan Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The symposium targeted on the textile industry specifically, engaging textile businessmen to share their views about prevalent industry trends in social compliance, compliance issues and impediments in implementation. Issues relating to working conditions, wages, work hours, child labor abolition, social security arrangements for the workers, health care facilities and treatment of women workers were discussed.

A general discussion about unfair treatment of suppliers by the international buyer also ensued. Businessmen put forth problems faced by them due to unjustified conditions imposed on them by international buyers resulting in loss of business. Social compliance is one such condition, costing a lot and when translated in the product price is unacceptable to the buyer. The buyer then switches business to other countries offering fewer prices even on a difference of a few cents. They urged GTZ and AVE to convey to international buyers that they should stay true to their word and respect hidden costs of compliance borne by the suppliers.
